On Dreaming and Doing

The beginning of the year is always a good time to think about and write about goals for the coming year. Christopher and I celebrate our anniversary in December each year and our date usually turns into a goal setting session. I love it... thinking about the possibilities that are right around the corner and laying out the plan for how we're going to get there.

So today I'm going to share an overview of our 2020 goals - what we hope to accomplish and what a successful year would look like to our family:

Complete 1 rental property - Owning rentals is a huge part of our dream - someday we'll own more than we can manage ourselves. But for 2020, we are working on getting our large shop converted into a rental property. The best part is that it will turn into a home for my mom - she's planning on moving onto our property in June. It will be fun to have her close by and she's having fun designing the space!

Find our old bus - I grew up in a school bus (something many people do not know about me). My dad had converted a school bus into a motor home and we spent years in it traveling the country - exploring, wandering, loving - together. My passion project is to find the old bus and it is something that I plan to accomplish this year. I will write more about in another blog post.

Finish Renovation Projects - Last year we purchased a fixer-upper foreclosure property and dumped about $60K into a massive renovation. From thick, stained pink carpet throughout the house (including the bathrooms!), to sleek, modern vinyl plank flooring and so many other changes and upgrades, the house went from old and ugly to comfortable and beautiful. I have zero regrets about this new place we call home and am so glad it is mostly finished. There are those places though, that we just could not stretch our budget to get done - the master bathroom shower and tub, the laundry room, the school room. These are areas where we are working on getting completed in 2020 and I'm excited to see them come together!

Baby Steps 4 &5 - Anyone who knows me well knows that I am a big Dave Ramsey fan. Christopher and I started out in our marriage with Dave's financial principles as our guidance (though they are really not Dave's at all, but rather are based on the oldest book in history - the Bible). Dave lays out a financial plan into easy to digest "Baby Steps". We are finishing up Baby Step 3 (where we save up $15K for our emergency fund) and want to be working on paying our house off early by the end of this year.

Publish 2 Children's Books - I have been dreaming up this plan of writing children's books around my growing-up-in-a-bus experiences and this is the year that I plan on actually doing it. My 4th son is due to be born in May and I plan on taking some maternity leave and during that time I hope to be able to put my stories down and have 2 short books published before the year is done.

So there you have it - an overview of what 2020 is shaping up to be for our family. I left out the parts about Christopher running for the State House, getting into the groove of owning and managing our second business, schooling the boys, losing weight after baby comes, and so many other things. I've said it before and I will again - we lead a busy life, but I wouldn't have it any other way! I can't wait to see where we are by the end of 2020 - I have a feeling it'll be a place worth celebrating!
